Why your Google Business Profile is your most underused marketing asset

What is a Google Business Profile and why does it matter?

A Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that appears when someone searches for your business or a category near them. It controls Google Maps results, the local pack (the three businesses shown prominently in local search), and increasingly Google’s AI-generated answers.

For a local Denver or Aurora business, your GBP is often the first — and sometimes only — thing a potential customer sees before deciding whether to call or visit.

Why are most Google Business Profiles configured wrong?

The most common error is primary category. Google uses it to determine which searches your business is eligible to appear in. A flag store categorized as "Gift Shop" won’t appear for "flag store" searches. An HVAC company categorized as "Contractor" won’t appear for "air conditioning repair." This single misconfiguration can make an established business completely invisible in local search.

Other common issues: outdated hours, no recent posts, missing services, photos not updated in months, unanswered Q&A, unmanaged reviews.

What does a properly configured GBP look like?

Correct primary and secondary categories, accurate NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistent with your website, recent photos updated within 90 days, regular posts at minimum monthly, services listed with descriptions, Q&A monitored and answered, and review responses demonstrating active management.

How does GBP connect to AI search?

Google’s AI Overviews pull from GBP data when answering local queries. When someone asks Google AI for the best flag store in Aurora or HVAC repair near Denver, the AI references GBP data to identify and cite local businesses. A well-configured actively managed GBP is an AEO asset as much as an SEO one.

How long until results move?

GBP category fixes can show impact within 30 days. Active management compounds over 60–90 days. For a business invisible in local search, category correction combined with active management is the fastest path to local pack visibility.
